A lock puzzle is a type of mechanical puzzle. It consists of a lock with unusual or hidden mechanics. Such locks are sometimes called trick locks, because opening them is like performing a magic trick. A matching key may or may not be used in this trick.

Lock puzzles have a long history.

Chinese jewelry boxes often contain trick locks and hidden drawers. An example of such a box is an integral part of the plot of the movie Shanghai Knights. Clive Barker has written a number of horror stories (including The Hellbound Heart, which was made into the movie Hellraiser) centered around Lemarchand’s box which appears to be such a puzzle box but in fact opens the gates to Hell when manipulated.

Other lock puzzles stem from the necessity to invent secure locks in the Middle Ages.

Lock puzzles are closely related to puzzle boxes.

A tubular lock pick is a specialized lockpicking tool used for opening a tubular pin tumbler lock. Tubular lock picks are all very similar in design and come in sizes to fit all major tubular locks, including 6, 7, and 8-pin locks.

The tool is simply inserted into the lock and turned clockwise with medium tension. As the tool is pushed into the lock, each of the picks is slowly forced down until they stop, thus binding the driver pins behind the shear line of the lock. When the final pick is pushed down, the shear plane is clear and the lock opens. This can usually be accomplished in a matter of seconds.

Most tubular lock picks come with a “decoder” which lets the locksmith know at what depths the pins broke the shear plane. By using the decoding key after the lock has been picked, the locksmith can cut a tubular key to the correct pin depths and thus avoid having to replace the lock.

In 2004 it was widely publicized that the barrel of a cheap ballpoint pen would act as an effective lock pick for many brands of tubular lock.

A party bus (also known as a Party Ride, limo bus, limousine bus or luxury bus) is a large motor vehicle designed to carry 20 or more passengers. Party buses are often driven by chauffeurs.

Party buses offer seating capacities from 20 to 50 passengers and include more amenities and standard equipment than most other forms of ground transportation. These amenities may include upgraded electrical systems, fast idle controller, AM/FM stereo with CD player, power/heated remote control mirrors, power door locks and windows, upgraded seats and fabric, strip-poles, air actuated passenger entry door, video and audio systems, luggage partitions, back-up cameras, seat and fabric upgrades, smoke machines, laser lights, disco lights, strobe lights, on-board restroom, ADA equipment and a large array of floor plans to suit demanding transportation needs.

Party buses are primarily used for, although not limited to, weddings, proms and bachelor and bachelorette parties as well as round trips to casinos, nights on the town, personalized drop offs and pick ups at various bars and nightclubs, birthdays and city tours.

While some party buses are used for week long tours and events, most are used for day trips and events. Most party buses, however, operate as livery vehicles, providing upmarket competition to limousines and taxicabs.

Goring Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames at the Goring Gap in England. The lock is located between the twin villages of Goring-On-Thames, Oxfordshire, and Streatley, Berkshire, and is adjacent to Goring and Streatley Bridge. The lock is owned and managed by the Environment Agency.

The lock is situated almost under the bridge and is easily accessible from both Goring and Streatley

The reach is only just over half a mile long. The Thames Path crosses the bridge to Streatley and continues on the western bank to Cleeve Lock.

Neptune’s Staircase is a staircase lock comprising eight locks on the Caledonian Canal. It is the longest staircase lock in the United Kingdom, and lifts boats 64 feet (19.5 metres). The locks were originally hand-powered, but have been converted to hydraulic operation.
The base plinths of the original capstans are still present, although the capstans themselves are now gone.

The current lock gates weigh 22 tons each, and require a team of three lock-keepers (at minimum) to run the staircase.

It is usual for them to operate on an “Efficiency Basis”, that is the keepers try to either fill each cut with boats on the lift or drop, or to allow for passing, ie a dropping craft to pass a rising craft on the same fill/empty cycle.

It is one of the biggest staircases in Britain, and is kept by British Waterways.

It is located at Banavie, near Fort William just north of Loch Linnhe.

The structure was designed by Thomas Telford.

Strebor Diecasting (the name comes from Roberts spelled backwards) was a die-casting company in Radcliffe, Lancashire who achieved widespread notice as makers of cylinder locks and locking devices for the motor trade during the 1960s and 1970s under the STREBOR and STRONIS trade names. Their locks were to be found on British cars such as the Mini. The company was founded around 1930, and finally dissolved in 2003/2004 following a period of rundown and some industrial relations problems.

Something Bitchin’ This Way Comes is an album by Lock Up, released in July 1989. It is the first label released album to feature Tom Morello.

The title of the album is an allusion to Ray Bradbury’s novel Something Wicked This Way Comes, which in turn takes its title from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Cookham Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames near Cookham, Berkshire. It is owned and managed by the Environment Agency. The lock is set in a lock cut which creates Formosa Island and it is surrounded by woods.

Reach above the lock

The river is picturesque and described as Wind in the Willows country. Kenneth Graham based much of his book on this part of the Thames.
